Could ADHD Be Affecting Your Child or Daily Life?
Does your child struggle to focus, sit still, stay organized, or follow through on tasks? Do you notice impulsive behaviors, forgetfulness, or constant restlessness interfering with school, work, or relationships? These may be signs of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults.
ADHD affects approximately 8% of school-age children and can continue into adolescence and adulthood. While hyperactivity symptoms may lessen with age, many individuals continue to experience difficulties with attention, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and organization throughout their lives.
At Balance Point Wellness, our experienced mental health providers offer ADHD evaluations, medication management, and personalized treatment plans for children, teens, and adults throughout Maryland and Delaware. Our compassionate team works closely with patients and families to help improve focus, emotional wellness, daily functioning, and overall quality of life.

What Is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of:
- Inattention
- Impulsivity
- Hyperactivity
These symptoms can vary from person to person and may affect individuals differently depending on age, environment, and daily responsibilities.
For many years, it was believed that children eventually “outgrew” ADHD during adolescence, especially as symptoms of hyperactivity appeared to lessen during the teenage years. However, research now shows that ADHD often persists from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood.
Current research estimates that approximately 2% to 4% of adults are living with ADHD. In childhood, ADHD is diagnosed more frequently in males than females. In adulthood, however, ADHD appears to be equally prevalent among men and women.
Common ADHD Symptoms
Inattention
Individuals with ADHD may experience:
- Trouble focusing or sustaining attention
- Becoming easily distracted
- Making careless mistakes
- Frequently losing things
- Difficulty following through on tasks
- Poor organizational skills
- Appearing not to listen when spoken to
Impulsivity
Symptoms of impulsivity may include:
- Acting without thinking
- Interrupting others during conversations
- Intruding on others’ activities
- Talking excessively
- Difficulty waiting for turns or being patient
Hyperactivity
Hyperactivity symptoms may include:
- Trouble sitting still
- Frequent fidgeting
- Feeling restless or constantly “on the go”
- Difficulty engaging in quiet activities
The Three Types of ADHD
ADHD can present in different ways, and individuals may experience varying combinations of symptoms.
ADHD Combined Type
Often referred to as “classic ADHD,” this is the most common presentation. Individuals experience symptoms of:
- Inattention
- Hyperactivity
- Impulsivity
ADHD Predominantly Inattentive Type
This type primarily involves difficulties with attention and concentration. Individuals may appear:
- Easily distracted
- Forgetful
- Disorganized
- Sluggish or daydreamy
This form of ADHD is often identified later than other types because symptoms may be less disruptive or noticeable in classroom and social settings.
ADHD Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
This type is characterized mainly by hyperactivity and impulsivity. Individuals may:
- Have difficulty sitting still
- Act without thinking
- Interrupt frequently
- Struggle with patience and self-control
This presentation occurs more often in younger children.
Why Early ADHD Treatment Is Important
Without proper support and treatment, ADHD may have serious consequences for both children and adults. These challenges can include:
- Academic struggles or school failure
- Family stress and disruption
- Depression and low self-esteem
- Problems with friendships and relationships
- Substance use concerns
- Delinquent or risky behaviors
- Increased risk for accidental injuries
- Difficulties maintaining employment or job performance
Additionally, at least two-thirds of individuals with ADHD have another co-existing condition, such as:
- Learning disabilities
- Anxiety disorders
- Behavioral concerns
- Mood-related challenges
Because ADHD frequently occurs alongside other emotional, behavioral, or learning difficulties, early identification and treatment are extremely important.
